Sophie Teunissen

People are a central topic in my works, I am inspired by philosophy and its issues about the relationship between people and reality. During my working process, I reflect on myself and how to deal with reality and others; I seek to confront people with problems of the heart. By doing this and translating it into image and text, I hope to stimulate the feelings and inner thoughts of the viewer, in the form of recognition, challenge, or suggestion. Self-knowledge, self-criticism, but also amazement and curiosity towards the world and the other are important and timeless values for me, which – especially now in a time of mass-everything, virtual anonymity, and profiling – deserve attention. In my work, I try to use these subjects in different ways.

In an attempt to constantly look inward, my work is about self-reflection and self-confrontation. At a time of social isolation and lockdowns, I think this is a topic that has become a reality for everyone. A consequence of the slowdown of everyday life is a confrontation with ourselves. There has been a lot of media attention for the psychological well-being of people and how the pandemic is impacting this. Our relationships with others have become limited or intensified. The lack of distraction and variety in our daily activities, in turn, has consequences for our emotional state. It is a subject that I have always been fascinated by and have had to deal with, both personally as well as with others in my environment. I address feelings of insecurity, doubt, frustration, love, conflict, despair, loneliness, connectedness, happiness, and irrationality. My work does not intend to scream for attention, nor to only highlight the heavy side of these emotions. I see beauty in the depth of our complex emotional world; the interaction between inside and outside, feeling and event, control and surrender. My drawings, etchings, and texts sketch a transition from one to the other and the struggle this can be. I hope to touch the viewer in a subtle way, without giving a clear-cut answer, through the looks or attitudes of my drawn figures. Emotion is something personal and universal at the same time, often ambiguous, and cannot be captured in simplicity. Our personal struggles reflect the world and hold the key to bigger issues. It is an endless source of inspiration within my work.
